“I love seeing others happy!” exclaimed seventh grader, Khybet Torres.

The AUPAE (Alumnos Unidos Para Aprender Español) Spanish Club students at Hidalgo ISD’s Ida Diaz Jr. High School marked Valentine’s Day by putting together care packages that consisted of personal hygiene items to donate to Mujeres Unidas/Women Together a shelter, located in McAllen.

Mujeres Unidas/Women Together is a non-profit organization that renders their services to victims/survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. It provides a safe refuge for those individuals seeking a safe environment.

The students in the Spanish Club enhanced the holiday spirit by bringing some giving and togetherness to others through charitable donations.

“Through these Valentine’s care packages, we are promoting self-love because it’s important to love yourself,” said eighth-grader, Victoria Rodriguez as she attentively placed the items in the basket.

Throughout the years, Hidalgo Independent School District has established a partnership with Mujeres Unidas/Women Together in finding ways to render their services and donations to help bring hope and joy to the victims at the shelter.

“When we give our time and resources to something greater than ourselves, we have the power to change the lives of others and ourselves,” said Sandra San Miguel, Spanish educator, founder, and sponsor of the Spanish Club. “The more we support the causes that matter to us, the better our communities can become.”

San Miguel promotes the advancement in the Latin community by creating awareness about community service. In return, it helps students become mindful of others and their needs.

“I really like it when we are able to donate to Mujeres Unidas because it allows me to give back to those in need, especially those who are less fortunate,” explained Rodriguez. “It hurts me to see them in those circumstances, but also gives me the opportunity to help them.”

The Spanish club has impacted the students in many ways. Additionally, it has also helped guide the students to lead with a purpose and empower others in the community with thoughtful leadership.

Furthermore, San Miguel encourages students to help build the community by uniting, nurturing and inspiring others.

“I’m really excited to make this donation because I enjoy giving to others,” said Torres. “I love to see others happy and excited, and most of all making others feel loved and cared for.”

San Miguel not only values the importance of higher education, but also hopes to impart on the students a sense of caring for others in the community.
